The world of video games and the world of sport are known to be two very masculine worlds. Theesport, which brings these two activities together, is not really much more open to women. The vast majority of professional video game players are men. It is therefore not always easy to make a place for yourself as a woman.
Beyond differentiated socialisation, being part of a minority is not always easy. However, for the first time since its creation, the professional Brawl Stars scene welcomes a female player. It is the Chinese "Shadow" who plays for the Lemon Garden team in the Chinese league.
WE HAVE OUR FIRST FEMALE PRO IN @Brawl_esports!🎉🏆

A huge welcome to Shadow!!!👋🏻
Such a fantastic development in the @BrawlStars competitive scene and I sincerely hope that we see continue to see more female players be inspired to rise to the challenge in other regions!💪🏻🔥 pic.twitter.com/dYUAyp6Agu
Brawl Stars, developed by Supercell, has taken its time to arrive in China. Although the game was released in 2018 in the vast majority of countries, the Chinese had to wait until June 2020 to get their turn in the adventure. But despite this delay, the Chinese were quicker: they are the ones who welcome the first pro player of the Brawl Stars scene. "Shadow" plays in the Lemon Garden team, with her teammates Feng and Arjie. She has nothing to envy them, as she has the best CV in the team, based on trophies.
She has 21,000, while her teammates have 'only' 12,264 and 14,135. She is therefore a player who should be taken very seriously and who has not been recruited to make up the numbers. She is not totally unknown to the public (she streams and has participated in showmats in the past). But this is the first time she has taken the plunge and entered a professional competition.
In esport, professional women players are still very isolated cases. Generally speaking, there are all-female teams and tournaments that host the majority of female pro players.
While these initiatives give them a real space to express themselves, to show themselves and to progress, they remain in a sort of professional antechamber, a secondary scene.
The fact that Shadow is becoming a pro Brawl Stars player in a mixed scene is therefore an even more striking progression!
